Anne Hathaway just revealed her terrifying transformation for ‘The Witches’ Remake

Ok, if there’s one thing getting us through the current situ, it’s the amount of good TV shows and movies coming our way and one we’re particularly looking forward to is The Witches.

Yup, the long-anticipated remake of Roald Dahl’s book is finally landing this month starring Anne Hathaway as The Grand High Witch, the leader of the witches coven who have a strong dislike for children.

If the 1990 one terrified the life out of you, this sets to do the same to a whole new generation. Fellow Oscar winner Octavia Spencer, Stanley Tucci and Kristin Chenoweth also star in the movie, directed by Robert Zemeckis.

Playing the gruesome Grand High Witch required a big transformation for Anne Hathaway, who took to Instagram to tease fans with a glimpse of her witchy look in a video featuring her and her fellow cast members.

“Here’s the think you need to know about witches,” she says in the short video. “They’re real. They’re here, and they live amongst us.”

The video goes onto explain some scary facts about witches, including the fact they have hands and not claws, they don’t have any toes, they all have large nostrils and are all bald underneath their wigs.

They also apparently have elongated mouths, and Anne showed off her enormous Joker-style grin in one scene which really gave us the creeps.

Anne’s caption read, “What has a witch ever done to you? Stream #TheWitchesMovie in @hbomax October 22. Internationally in cinemas soon #WitchesAreReal.”

If that hasn’t given you the heebie-geebies, the trailer for The Witches dropped a few weeks ago and it looks set to be just as haunting as the 90s classic.

The two minute clip opens with Rock, 55, narrating his story begins when he was a “young boy”, moving in with his grandmother (Spencer), who he describes as “a tough lady with a big heart.”

“Little by little, she brought me out of my sadness.” Going on to say, “I didn’t know it but there was a dark shadow looming nearby.” Then the silhouette of a witch appears by his window in a glimpse of the horrors to come. Rock bluntly reveals “Witches are real and they hate children!”

The trailer then shows a swanky hotel where a bunch of ladies seem to be gathering for a conference. If you’ve seen the original, you’ll know where this one is going.

In a shocking scene, Hathaway, who stars as the menacing Grand High Witch, removes her wig and reveals her plan, while hovering in the air with a potion in her hand.

“One drop will transform a child into a mouse!” she tells a large group of women, before finding a young boy (Jahzir Bruno) watching from a cracked door.

Upon discovering the child, he is thrown in the air and covered with purple boils, as he morphed into a rodent.

Hathaway told People that her role was the Grand High Witch was a “total collaboration between costumes, hair and make-up, the writers” and her dialect coach, telling the magazine her character was “an ‘opportunity to be silly and over the top.”

Spencer also told the publication: “Grandma was such a fun character to play because of her personality, expansive knowledge of witches and her compassion. She’s just the type of person you want on your side if you have to battle witches!”

The Witches was originally scheduled to land in cinemas earlier this year but due to the pandemic got pushed back. HBO Max then confirmed it would release the film on October 22 in the US.

Warner Bros has confirmed the movie will be available to UK viewers to rent on Premium Video On Demand (PVOD) from October 26 – just in time for Halloween.
